Zone Alarm, Comodo, Updates
Well, after trumpeting the virtues of Comodo Firewall Pro, what should occur but an Update which destroyed my equilibrium.
I am running what was the latest version, as of earlier this month, of CFP, free edition. While writing about AVG suite, Comodo, etc., an update indicator appeared in my Notification Area. Clicking it revealed the notice that an Update was available. Note that I have Comodo’s free firewall only. I clicked to learn the details of the Update, as I always do, if it is offered. The Update addressed some problems with the firewall that had not proven to be a problem for me. It also addressed a number of problems with the Comodo /Anti-virus/ application, which I do not use nor want. So, I dug around the Comodo site, to try to understand what was going on. I could not find any reference to the Free firewall Download. The only Downloads included the free AV, as well as the firewall.
So, the Update offered to me included adding the New! Improved! anti-virus, which I do not want or need. Next, I went to the WFL section (our “World famous Links,” Linked in each email post distributed.) I clicked the Link, which took me to the Download.com site. (I like to Link the sites that test, so that the downloader can get some outside opinions.) That site offered the earlier version that I had installed originally. Yet, it does not seem to be available on the publisher’s web site.
So, either the Comodo people have goofed; or, they are Upgrading everyone to a junior suite. That is not a good idea, since many people will end up with two running AV applications, if not more.
So, beware. Like Billy’s minions, publishers often load Updates with more than you might desire. Soon the answer here will manifest itself. For now, I like the version I have, and a stand-alone version of Comodo is still available using our exclusive WFLs, unavailable to the general public at any price.
